Santa Caterina is the peaceful white haven of the north Italian Alps. A romantic retreat for lovers of a cosy winter atmosphere. The Combo-ski-pass with Bormio offers a whole new world of skiing options for the whole family. With 105 km (St. Caterina & Bormio) of slopes between 1720 m (the town) and 2800 m (Mount Sobretta), it’s the perfect winter escape for couples, families and sport fans.
The St. Caterina ski area is surrounded by the high peaks of the "Ortles Cevedale" chain and is known as the „Last White Paradise“. Because of it`s high altitude and north-facing slopes, it offers guaranteed snow with runs for all levels. The best known among the many slopes is certainly the "Deborah Compagnoni", named after the best female skier in Italy.
Lovers of cross-country skiing will find 25kms of tracks through stunning scenery, leading through conifer woods and wide meadows.
Further sport opportunities are available outside the slopes: well-marked paths lead through the forests and can be used on foot or in snowshoes. Touring skiing and telemark are offered by local companies. A very special treat are the walks organized by guides. Here you can get a special view of the fauna and flora of the Alps and an insight into the Alp’s traditions. Find more information on the ski area Bormio right here.
In between high snowy peaks lies the quiet and picturesque town of Santa Caterina, an oasis of peace and family friendly atmosphere. This town has proven to be the perfect solution for seekers of piece, relaxation and sport. Thanks to its quietness and the nearly total absence of car traffic, the little village of Santa Caterina is perfect for families.
You can find 25 hotels and apartment houses spread out in the valley. Next to traditional restaurants and pizzerias, the town centre offers small shops where you can find everything from food to clothing. A natural ice-skating rink is a special treat for children and grown-ups alike.
Santa Caterina also guarantees environmental quality! The air is 100% clean thanks to a district heating system for the production of heat and hot water.
Besides to the restaurants, Santa Caterina also offers rustic pubs and bars and a disco. For every seeking more choice for night entertainment, we recommend to drive to the neighbouring Bormio that is located 12 km away.
Night life is mostly low-key and centred on the few hotel bars. The Hotel Genzianella's is one of the more popular with a rustic wooden affair whilst the Hotel Sport has a typical stube and a collection of wines stored in the cellar which proprietor Norberto Pedranzini will be happy to choose you a bottle from, perhaps one of the local Valtellina wines.
Evening activities are organised by the tourist board through the week. They include as moonlit snowshoe walk suitable for everyone through the woods of the Stelvio National Park. There's also a weekly torchlit downhill ski run with the resort's ski-instructors, followed by mulled wine for everybody.
Together with ski instructors the Children will have fun in the "Tapis-roulant" area. Also, there is a mini-club equipped with a ski run and games in the snow. For the children, there is the mini-club with surveillance people, a service area, equipped with a little ski run and fun games in the snow.
There are no terrain parks or other facilities especially for snowboarders here but the ski schools will teach boarders and there are excellent freeride opportunities with a guide in the powder fields.
The fast modern gondola uplift to access more than 1000 vertical metres of terrain has to be a draw too.
